"Greetings from the Year 3003" by Andi Laird: July 2024 1st Place

My hands glow.

They shake, electricity coursing through them, scorching my veins. What’s happening? The bones inside me rattle like maracas. Am I doing something to make this happen? Focus, Jenna.

A muffled voice comes from behind. I cannot interpret it. I seem to vibrate, my hands emanating a bluish gleam. The ground shakes, tossing me to my knees and forcing my hands to the floor of my bedroom to brace myself.  The blue spreads through my fingertips, tendrils of it soaking the floor. Something grasps my shoulder and grips tightly, the faraway voice trying to reach me. All thoughts are extinguished as I watch the blue light expand, leaving nothing behind.

The blue fades. I inhale a massive breath. Standing up, I nearly fall again from the sight. A kingdom. Buildings with neon glowing lights that go so high they fade into the clouds. Vehicles swarm through the sky. The noises! Beeps, whizzes, clicks, and springs.

“Where are we, Jenna?” someone whispers.

I start, turning to the right. Amelia, my friend who had come over to do homework with me, stands beside me looking overwhelmed. She had been the voice from before.

Amelia searches my face, seeking answers. I shrug, having no answers.

“I’m pretty sure,” Amelia mutters,” we’re in the future. Flying cars? It’s got to be at least two hundred years later.”

Future? How did my hands make Amelia and I go to the future?

I notice a man wearing an electronic headset and a glowing suit. His shoes have engines that allow him to fly. Fly! His eyes land on me and squint. He glides over, a flying car trailing behind him.

“You must be it,” he muses.

“What year is this?” Amelia ventures.

“Get in,” he steps in the vehicle. “It's year 3003,” he calls to us.

 “We shouldn’t,” Amelia whispers.

“What choice do we have?” I reply, climbing into the back. Amelia follows reluctantly.

“Where are we going?” I question.

“We found a small box that has an apple on the back of it. We want you to explain its uses to us. Now, buckle up!”
